Opening Reception - Every Street is Charlotte Street

KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice is pleased to present Every Street is Charlotte Street June 2 – August 4, 2017 Opening Reception: Friday, June 2 from 6 - 8 p.m. Exhibiting in the South Gallery: REVOLUTIONARY AWAKENING Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin (with Glenn North & Rodney M. Thompson) In association with Charlotte Street Foundation’s Every Street is Charlotte Street program, the KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice is pleased to present Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin with poet, Glenn North and filmmaker, Rodney M. Thompson. Both Ruffin and North are Charlotte Street Award Fellows with Ruffin receiving it in 2010 and North in 2009. The exhibition features two series of works. The first, in conversation with written words by Glenn North, presents three new works by Ruffin reflecting on what has, or has not, changed in contemporary society as it relates to social activism. The second, My Mother’s Club: March On Kansas City, is a major work by Ruffin being seen for the first time, initiated during her residency at the Omi International Arts Center in 2012. Inspired by the history of African American women’s social clubs in Kansas City, these works are presented in tandem with the documentary film, My Mother’s Club, by Rodney M. Thompson. Exhibiting in the North Gallery: MAX KEY In association with Charlotte Street Foundation’s Every Street is Charlotte Street program, the KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice is also pleased to present artist, Max Key. Key is a 2005 Charlotte Street Award Fellow and alumni (’96 painting) of the Kansas City Art Institute. The exhibition features two new large-scale paintings. In regard to these works Key states: “My paintings are meta-landfills. Wads of waste. Chewed mounds of collapsing left overs and juicy catastrophes. It is in our culture of excess and gluttony where I find inspiration and the desire to find beauty and color in that blurry grey area between ‘need’ and ‘want.’” As part of Charlotte Street Foundation’s 20th anniversary year celebration, Charlotte Street is collaborating with partners across Kansas City with Every Street is Charlotte Street—a cross-platform program featuring 20 years of Charlotte Street Award Fellows. Participants include Central Library Branch of the Kansas City Library, The Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Folly Theatre, H&R Block Artspace, KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice, and more. Twenty partners in total across the metro Kansas City area join with Charlotte Street to commemorate 20 years of the unrestricted cash awards for artists, and the over 100 artists who have received it. Public Hours: 12 - 5 p.m. Tuesday - Friday, Saturday by appointment, First Fridays 6 - 8 p.m. Notice: The gallery will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th, in celebration of Independence Day.
